In the Iliad, Eleon is mentioned with Hile, Peteon, Ocalea and Medeon, among the towns of the Boeotians who came on fifty naves.

The toponym "Eleoni" was read on a tablet of Thebes of Boeotia in Linear B. "Eleonas", a contemporary town, close to Thiva, in Greece, undoubtedly owes its name to this ancient city, even if the ancient site is on the commune of Arma, between Thebes and Tanagra. Archaeological work has just been launched.
