Sparta is a modern city of Greece with more than 18,000 inhabitants. In the Iliad and Odyssey Sparta plays an important role : Menelaus, the husband scorned by Helen, was the king of this city. It is described as a city of "beautiful women", and also, alternatively of divine or great Lacedaemon.

The decipherers of Linear B recognized the designation "Lakedaimonios", ie "Lacedaemonians", on tablets found at Thebes of Boeotia, thus confirming the existence of the people, and also, probably, of the city at the Final Bronze Age, during the Mycenae period.
